Read state of charge, plug status, charging state, and estimated range from MG electric vehicles. Supports remote start and stop of charging via the iSMART API.
Getting Started
Connect your MG electric vehicle to see battery state of charge, plug status, and estimated range — and let Joule Genie start and stop charging at the cheapest times.
Step 1: Set Up the MG iSMART App
If you haven't already, download the MG iSMART app (available on iOS and Android) and create an account. Register your vehicle in the app using the VIN — you'll find this on the windscreen, in the door jamb, or in your vehicle documents. Make sure you can see your vehicle's status (battery level, range) in the app before proceeding.
Step 2: Check Your iSMART Subscription
Remote vehicle status and charging control require an active iSMART connectivity subscription. Most MG EVs (MG4, MG ZS EV, MG5) include this free for the first few years. Check the iSMART app under Account > Subscription to confirm your subscription is active. If it has expired, contact your MG dealer to renew.
Step 3: Add the Integration in Joule Genie
In Joule Genie, go to Settings > Integrations > Add Integration and select MG (iSMART) from the Vehicle category. Enter the email address and password you use to log in to the MG iSMART app.
Step 4: Select Your Vehicle
Joule Genie will connect to your iSMART account and list all registered vehicles. Select the one you want to monitor and optimise. If you only have one vehicle it will be selected automatically.
Step 5: Verify Connection
Within a few minutes the dashboard will show your vehicle's state of charge, plug status, and estimated range. When your vehicle is plugged in, the optimiser will schedule charging into the cheapest rate slots on your tariff.
Troubleshooting
- Vehicle not appearing? Make sure the vehicle is registered and visible in the MG iSMART app first.
- "Authentication failed"? Double-check your iSMART email and password. If you use social login (Google/Apple) in the MG app, you may need to set a password via the app's account settings.
- Status not updating? The vehicle must have mobile signal and the iSMART subscription must be active. Status updates may be delayed when the vehicle is in a poor signal area or in deep sleep mode — starting the vehicle briefly will wake the connectivity module.
