Read state of charge, plug status, charging state, and estimated range from Volkswagen electric vehicles. Supports models including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, ID.Buzz, and plug-in hybrids on the Cariad connected-car platform.
Getting Started
Connect your Volkswagen electric vehicle to see battery state of charge, plug status, charging state, and estimated range — and let Joule Genie schedule charging into the cheapest tariff periods.
Step 1: Set Up the Volkswagen Connect App
If you haven't already, download the Volkswagen app (sometimes branded "We Connect", available on iOS and Android) and sign in with your Volkswagen ID. Make sure your vehicle appears in the app and is showing status data (battery level, range) before proceeding. New vehicles include a multi-year We Connect subscription — check under My Car > Services in the app to confirm the connectivity services are active.
Step 2: Add the Integration in Joule Genie
In Joule Genie, go to Settings > Integrations > Add Integration and select Volkswagen from the Vehicle category. Enter the email address and password you use to sign in to the Volkswagen app.
Step 3: Select Your Vehicle
Joule Genie will connect to your Volkswagen ID account and list all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered. Select the vehicle you want to monitor and optimise. If you only have one eligible vehicle it will be selected automatically.
Step 4: Verify Connection
Within a few minutes the dashboard will show your vehicle's state of charge, plug status, charging state, and estimated range. When your vehicle is plugged in, the optimiser will plan charging into the cheapest rate periods on your tariff.
Supported Features
- Battery state of charge (SOC)
- Plug status (plugged in / unplugged)
- Charging state (charging / not charging)
- Estimated range (km)
Supported Models
Any Volkswagen BEV or PHEV with an active We Connect subscription, including: ID.3, ID.4, ID.4 GTX, ID.5, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer, ID.Buzz, e-up!, and compatible PHEV variants (Tiguan eHybrid, Touareg eHybrid, Passat GTE).
Troubleshooting
- "Authentication failed"? Double-check your Volkswagen ID email and password. Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda, Cupra, and Audi share a single VW Group identity provider — credentials that work in the Audi/SEAT/Skoda apps work here too.
- Vehicle not appearing? Ensure the vehicle is registered in the Volkswagen app and status data is visible there first. Vehicles without an active We Connect subscription will not return data.
- Status not updating? Volkswagen vehicles may delay status updates when parked with the infotainment fully off. Status typically refreshes when the vehicle is next used or the ignition is cycled.
